I just went for my walk alittle while ago and it's getting easier. When I first started walking I was out of breath and it took everything I had to keep going. Now I'm breathing normally and my heart doesn't feel like its going to jump out of my chest. Its so nice to know that I'm strengthening my body. I think its time to up my workouts. I don't think increasing the time is the way to go I think I need to start interval training.
Awhile back someone sent me the link to this site http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/index.shtml and I wish I knew who it was but I can't find the post anywhere. If it was someone reading this just let me know and I will add your name to this post. I looked over this site and it gives you alot of tips on how to work your way up to running. I am definitely a beginner so I'm thinking I need to take the approach they discuss on this site where you do intervals of running and then walking. Over time your able to run farther and farther.
I know alot of you are runners, how did you train yourself to run? Any tips would really be appreciated because I definitely don't want to hurt myself first thing and then be out of commission for awhile.
Thanks for the info on the site. I am trying to walk more each time. I will check it out.
ReplyDeleteI used couch to 5K.. and I definitely recommend it, but don't be afraid to do 'week 1' for more than one week. Doing it in the time period prescribed is a little rough for beginners. All I know is that I tried to be a runner for years and never succeeded until C25K.
ReplyDeleteYes!!!! I am starting couch to 5K too =) We can be buddies. I have been running a bit, though so I'm thinking of skipping week one. YAY for us becoming runners!
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie I hope you can find some useful information there.
ReplyDeleteThanks Blubeari that makes me feel better about using that program.
Yay Katie this is going to be fun starting a new challenge. Let me know how things are going for you.
I've heard lots of great things about C25K, but if what you're doing on your own works for you, then I'd stick with it. Either way, you're doing great!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME! Great work! I am joining a walking group that will transition to running for a 10 Mile Road Race next August 2011. I can't wait. And yet I can! lol What a joyful and bold undertaking! Good on you! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteAll my love to you,
Becky from http://mywalkfromflabtofab.blogspot.com
I just got really comfortable with walking and each saturday I add a little more jogging distance to my jog. I walk and jog, but I try to do the jog straight thru now. I used to jog every other half mile. Now I am addicted to the endorphins of running for longer!
ReplyDeleteI dream of being a runner, but so far I can't get the go-ahead from the doc. Bad, bad foot and knees. Bummer. But I get on the elliptical and pretend I'm running. That might have to be my running if I can't manage the real thing. I'm excited for you to try this new activity!
ReplyDeleteKelly I just think I need to up my workouts either in time or difficulty because walking like I am is becoming to easy.
ReplyDeleteHi Becky, yea I love a challenge. I looked up some local 5K's in my area last night and there is actually one in my town in December. I don't know if I will be ready for it but thats something to work towards.
Shane I think that is what I'm going to do is just try to add alittle more jogging each time I go walking until I build up to where I can jog it all the way through.
Thank you Charlotte. Sorry you aren't allowed to jog but at least there are lots of other exercises you can enjoy.
Another fan of Couch to 5K here! The program totally worked for me and I enjoyed every second of it.
ReplyDeleteIf it sounds too challenging, you can try the conservative version first: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=27&printer=1
Thank you Rochester I will definitely check out that site.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing C25k too! If you have an iphone or ipod touch, you can get the app of c25k. It's awesome! It tells you when to walk and when to run and you can stream your music through it.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting. When I started running, I just ran as long as I could. At first it wasn't very far (like less than a 1/4 of a mile), but I kept doing it and eventually worked my way up. Now I can run 13 miles straight (and maybe further, I just haven't tried). I look forward to watching your progress.
