Worried about boredom

Today has been the first time that I've experienced boredom in awhile and its kind of scary.  I knew that I was off school this week until Friday so I worked really hard this weekend to get everything done so I could enjoy some rest and relaxation during the week.  Well that stategy is backfiring on me.

I was fine today while everyone was at school and work but after they got home and my oldest son went to his dads and my two youngest went to my moms that just left me and my husband and we were pretty much just laying around here doing nothing.  Well I kept catching myself walking into the kitchen to see what there was to snack on.  I did end up eating a few more nuts and a baby banana but I don't want to start responding to boredom by eating.

I was talking to my husband about how bored I was and how I was worried that after one of my classes ended this Friday that I wasn't going to have as much to keep me busy.  I said I guess I can walk a few laps around the neighborhood when I get bored and he said do you want me to go jog with you right now?  I said what?  He said go get ready and we will go jog a few laps so I hurried and got ready and we went.  I did jog alittle, maybe .3 of a mile but its still really hard for me to jog with this much weight on me.  We only did 1.5 miles but it felt so good to do something instead of sitting around here being bored thinking about food.

I really like routine and a schedule in my life and starting this Friday one of my classes will be ending so this is going to be a big change for me and I don't do well with change.  Any suggestions on how to deal with this?  What do you do when you are bored and want to eat?

  1. I buy a PPV movie, or blog or respond to blogs. Or I surf eBay... I know exactly what you are talking about...I used to bored eat all the time.

  2. I so feel you on the boredom. I was feeling a little bored today and wanted desperately to run to my fridge. Took a nap instead, lol.

  3. Couple suggestions - build more exercise into your schedule to take up the time. My last day of my 2nd job is wednesday and I am going to use that extra time to hit the gym more =)

and when I want to eat I get a huge glass of water and blog =)

  4. Whoohoo for being active instead of eating when you felt bored!

I jump on my stationary bike - I don't often have the opportunity for boredom, but I do tend to be an emotional eater - and this seems to help no end to get my focus in the right place again.

    Good luck, Christina!

  5. I usually spend the time catching up on blogs if I do get bored. I usually have something to do though. I would suggest exactly what you did today. Go hit the block or a local walking trail. Put on the MP3 and get to getting!

  6. definitely the exercise helps, it fills up your time and it also helps with the nervousness that sometimes leads us to emotionally eating when bored!

  8. Oh hon, I am soooo feeling this post. Since I work from home, I tend to go through a ton of those boredom spells, which unfortunately does end up sometimes with me grazing in the kitchen. It can be a vicious cycle. I told my husband that I was going to find a job outside the home once our boys get old enough to stay at home by themselves after school.

  9. Wow, I think this is a theme in my life - I keep hearing about boredom and realizing the same thing is happening to me.

Great line about not wanting to respond to boredom by going to the kitchen. So true - I did it last night.

  10. I think I'm going to make out a list of things I can do when I'm bored, there is always more housework to do or hobbies I can work on and also exercise. When I get bored I will just go to my list and see what I can get done and mark off...you know I love making lists anyway. Thanks so much for all the comments its nice to know that I'm not the only one who has this problem and that most of you find a way to deal with it.

  11. I iron...just kidding. I don't like ironing. What a supportive hubby you have. Boredom is a dieter's nemesis. Some people do crafty things, but I'm not into that...so I phone a friend or I do a task that I keep putting off that won't take hours - like organizing the junk drawer or go through my make-up - clean my make-up brushes, throw old stuff away...then I feel like I've accomplished something and it relieve my boredom.

  12. Thanks Just Me you gave me more things to add to my list, I think thats what I'm going to do right now is make out my boredom list. I just don't want anything to stand in my way of losing weight so I guess I should head it off before it really becomes a problem.
